The Material... It is important to be specific as possible about the material type since even
similar grades will grind much differently.
Stress Relieve... In general, if the part has a flatness tolerance, the material should be thermally stress relieved or Sullivan can not guarantee results. This will also insure that once the parts are ground flat, they will remain flat after shipment to the end user.
Parallel Tolerance... Parallel tolerance is the is the acceptable variation between the TWO surfaces of the plate.
Flatness Tolerance... Flatness tolerance is the acceptable variation between ONE surface of the plate and an imaginary plane.
Overstock... The following guidelines will insure tolerances of your project:
Clean up Two Sides (No flatness tolerances)
  • Finish Thickness of 2" or Less - 1/8" Stock Over Finish
  • Finish Thickness of 2" or More - 3/16" to 1/4 Over Finish

    • Two Sides to Size,   (No Flatness Tolerance)
  • Finished Thickness of 2" or Less - 1/8" Stock Over Finish
  • Finished Thickness of 2" or More - 3/16" to 1/4" Over Finish

    • Two Sides to Size with Flatness Tolerances
  • 1/4" to 3/8" Stock over Finish depending on part size 
  • Thermal Stress Relieve to insure flatness tolerance

    Reminder... Tight flatness tolerances are obtainable, but add more time to the process thus more cost. Make sure you are paying for exactly what you need.
